Dapper Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland

Usually I go all out for Dapper Day, but the fall of 2014 was…well, I just wasn’t feeling it. A lot of stuff was going on around this point in my life. Long story. But I still wanted to participate, just without a lot of sewing.

I ended up putting together a really simple outfit out of items in my closet. I had a black strapless Forever 21 dress with big fabric flowers on the skirt that had just been sitting around for ages, and I decided it would be perfect. I based my outfit off of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, so I added a thin black cardigan and a red belt with a silver heart shaped clasp. The red tights were from Target and the black flats with the red hearts were from Modcloth too (but via eBay). And of course there was a petticoat stuffed up there too; it’s not Dapper Day if I’m not swathed in chiffon ruffles.

My hair was surprisingly successful. I used my little mesh donut from Target to shape my bun (since I have the WORST BABY FINE HAIR EVER) and I curled my bangs back from my forehead and pinned the ringlet in place. I sprayed the whole thing to death with hairspray and surprisingly it all stayed! What a miracle for Florida.

Dapper Day was held at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and a bunch of us Icon cast members (current and former) went together. It was also the final day of operation for the Backlot Tour, so we rode it together. Honestly, while it’s sad that the attraction closed, it took up a lot of space without offering a lot to do. I’m looking forward to Toy Story and Star Wars opening up in the now-vacant space!

(Still bitter about Movie Ride, though. Always bitter about Movie Ride.)

Also I bought a Sven plush. That happened.

Molly Hooper

My students decided that they wanted to dress up like fun things this week, and they picked today was Sherlock Day. My contribution was a measly attempt at Molly Hooper- a cardigan reminiscent of a lab coat and a ponytail.

At least they seemed happy!

And speaking of my students, that’s where I’ve been for the past month! I just finished a production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and boy, is my brain broken. It was a fantastic experience and my kids did a wonderful job, but it ate up all of my time. But now I have some time to breathe, and I can get back to doing things other than costume fittings and fight choreography rehearsals. It was a great idea to schedule the play right before Thanksgiving, because it gave me plenty of time to relax over the break. I literally spent my entire vacation (since I didn’t have access to the car) sitting around and writing. Marvelous!

But anyways…

I absolutely love this dress! One of my favorite bloggers had a clean-out-my-closet sale, and I snapped this one up immediately. It still had the tags on and everything! I’m looking forward to wearing it in the summer without a cardi or tights, but I couldn’t help but wear it now.

Rachel-Minnie Berrymouse

My students debated about whether I looked more like Minnie Mouse or Rachel Berry. At least they think it’s cute.

I didn’t wash my hair today. And I went out in public. THIS NEVER HAPPENS. I am a compulsive hair-washer. I keep reading things about how it’s bad for your hair, it strips it of natural oils, you need to use non-sulfate based shampoos…and I’ll go like half a day before being like “OH GOD I’M SO GROSS SOMEONE HAND ME THE HERBAL ESSENCES.” I only shampoo the top of my head and condition the rest, but still. I think this is the first time in my life that I’ve voluntarily left the house with my hair unwashed.

I did use dry shampoo, though. Which I’m still a little leery of. But it made me feel better, so okay!

Today was the first day that my adorable flock of actors ran through Act I of Narnia all the way through. It took nearly two hours, but for our first real run-through, it went really well! They’re all very inexperienced, but they all work really hard and I’m proud of them.

Also, this dress makes my boobs look way too big and there’s literally nothing I can do about that.

The Compliments Outfit

I don’t know if I was just around super nice people today or what, but I got a ton of compliments on this outfit! I was pretty excited. It’s not a typical outfit for me- I usually don’t do dresses with narrow skirts- but it was comfy and I felt cute and it was the perfect thing to cheer up a dreary rainy day- even if my belt and boots were different shades of brown. Oh, well. YOLO and whatnot.

I love the combination of navy and gold, and these mustard-y tights went really well with the dress, I thought. Although every time I wear them, my sister mistakes it for my actual skin color. She insists it’s because of the Great Legwarmer Tan of ’09.

I wore this for a long day of subbing for fifth grade, rummaging around my sad little library, teaching voice and diction in theatre arts (we did tongue twisters!), aftercare, and a Monday night church service. But I felt cute the whole time- even though my hair exploded in wild rain-curls and I had to pin it up for Emanate. It was still kind of cute!

Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

8/21/12: Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

I need to learn how to make better facial expressions. And poses that don’t involve hands on my hips. I might have to start doing cliche fashion blogger poses, just so I can change things up.

I won this dress in a cutthroat eBay auction and I’m so glad I did! It’s so comfortable and adorable- although it hikes halfway up my thighs when I sit down. But it’s so cute, I don’t mind wearing it with tights!

Although, speaking of which, my husband didn’t realize I was wearing tights. He just thought I had oompa-loompa legs. Thanks, husband.

I was going to wear this with a pair of yellow espadrille sandals, but I just got this pair of Blowfish Hamish boots and really, really wanted to wear them. It’s probably weird to wear boots and tights with a summer dress, but eh. It made me happy and it was comfortable!
