Look of the Day: I’m Gonna Wreck It!

I am seriously in love with this shirt. I searched all over Disney World when I was there in March for a Wreck It Ralph shirt, with no success. So where do I find it? Walmart. For five dollars. I BOUGHT IT THEN AND THERE.

I typically wouldn’t wear jeans and a graphic tee to work, but I’m just in outservice now and cleaning my classroom, so I don’t gotta be fancy or nothin’.

Hair and Makeup: Katie’s Everyday Routine from A Beautiful Mess

Have you ever seen Katie on A Beautiful Mess or on her blog, Skunkboy Creatures? She is perfect. Absolutely flawless. Her life is perfect and beautiful and her husband is gorgeous and her daughters are beautiful and she dresses wonderfully and her house is filled with perfectly curated vintage finds and her hair. HER HAIR. Her hair is the most glorious shade of red imaginable.

Excuse me while I go eat jellybeans in the corner.

Anyways. I don’t look nearly as ethereally lovely (the Walmart Wreck It Ralph tee kind of negates any attempt at looking perfectly hipster twee), but I think it’s a sweet, simple look. I’ll probably try it again…if I can convince my hair to stop being so fluffy. That’s the only way I can describe my hair. It’s fluffy.

Also, I bet five bucks my hair ends up in a ponytail before the end of the day.

Hair:
#1: Wash it, spritz on detangler (I use Dove), and let it air dry. I don’t think I even own a hair dryer…

#2: Spritz with Tresseme heat protectant, attempt to curl, and despair over hair’s stubborn fluffiness.

#3: Comb through gently, add Moroccan oil, shrug at your reflection, and stick a hair tie in your pocket.

Look of the Day: My Dress has Fish On It!

That is literally the first thing my students said to me today. And lo, she spake the truth. There is indeed a fish on my dress. Two, actually.

I needed a perky dress to get me through the day. Yesterday was my last day teaching my beloved theatre arts kids, and today is my last day for tutoring and my kindergarten afterschool class. It’s gonna be sad, yo.

Anyways. I’ll get weepy about it later.

Hair Tutorial: Quick and Simple Updo

(I did this on second-day hair.)

#1: Tease the crown of the head- I smoothed it out with a little bit of hairspray on a comb.

#2: Divide into three sections and braid each section loosely. I tied each one off with a snap clip instead of an elastic. You’ll see why.

#3: Loop each braid into a small bun and pin in place with bobby pins. Spritz with hairspray.

Honestly, I didn’t think I’d really like this. Mostly because I feel like updos make my head look too small for my body. Does anyone else have this happen? No? Just me? Okay.

Anyways, I liked this! I think it’s cute!

Verdict: Thumbs Up

Makeup: Get Ready: Night Out by NikkiPhillippi

Why did I do a Nikki tutorial so early?! I’m so intimidated. She’s perfect. Ack. Why did I do this?

Well, nervous hiccuping aside, I did this one. I think it turned okay, although my attempt wasn’t nearly as bold and luminous. I also was too scare to make my blush or contouring or highlighting as bold. I’ll get the courage at some point, right?

Maybe. Not counting on it.

Look of the Day: Flower Child

Today marks my first day of trying out Youtube and Pinterest hair and makeup tutorials!! HURRAY! I have a HUGE list of tutorials I want to try.

Hair Tutorial: Quick and Easy Way to Get Beach Waves
#1: Spritz damp hair with Garnier wave spray and braid loosely
#2: After the braids have mostly dried, twist them away from your face and go over them with a straightener. (I don’t have a straightener so I used a curling iron…this was probably a poor choice.)
#3: Let the braids cool completely, undo, and separate gently. Use a little bit of Moroccan oil on the ends.

I was pretty disappointed in this tutorial. It’s not the tutorial’s fault, though…I think I just have obstinate hair. Because I didn’t end up with beachy waves. I ended up with Merida hair.

And we can’t lie. Merida’s hair is awesome. Look at that glorious mane.

Verdict: thumbs down

Makeup Tutorial: Simple Romance by sparkliebarbiexo

Is it Valentine’s Day? No.

Do I care?

I LOVE Kacey’s tutorials. Especially for her eye looks. Oh my lord, I need to steal her talents. Is that possible? Wasn’t there a dude on Heroes who could do that? Yeah, if I had that power I would totally steal her eyeshadow abilities.

I’m a creeper.

Anyways. I’ve watched her tutorials for ages now, and this is the first time I’ve actually tried one. I think I need more practice, but it’s a beautiful look and overall I think I did all right with it!

Outfit of the Day: I Dress Like a Kindergartener and a Grandma at the Same Time

I have a really bad habit of dressing like crap. Like, I just…I don’t know. It’s almost the end of the school year and I’ve practically given up on life. So I’m using this blog to motivate myself. Effective? Hopefully. I want to look nice. And look my age. But unfortunately, this is definitely not a look for a grown up. Dammit. I need to work on that.

You’d think that combining saddle shoes and a dress Rachel Berry wore on the first season of Glee would be a good indicator that I’m not dressing my age…

Molly Hooper

11/26/12
My students decided that they wanted to dress up like fun things this week, and they picked today was Sherlock Day. My contribution was a measly attempt at Molly Hooper- a cardigan reminiscent of a lab coat and a ponytail.

At least they seemed happy!

And speaking of my students, that’s where I’ve been for the past month! I just finished a production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and boy, is my brain broken. It was a fantastic experience and my kids did a wonderful job, but it ate up all of my time. But now I have some time to breathe, and I can get back to doing things other than costume fittings and fight choreography rehearsals. It was a great idea to schedule the play right before Thanksgiving, because it gave me plenty of time to relax over the break. I literally spent my entire vacation (since I didn’t have access to the car) sitting around and writing. Marvelous!

But anyways…

I absolutely love this dress! One of my favorite bloggers had a clean-out-my-closet sale, and I snapped this one up immediately. It still had the tags on and everything! I’m looking forward to wearing it in the summer without a cardi or tights, but I couldn’t help but wear it now.

The Ravenclaw Dress

10/29/12

I know this is sacrilege in the name of all the is outfit blogging, but I hate taking my pictures outside. The light is always terrible and unpredictable, and I’ve tried different spots all around my house, and it’s always awful. I want to go back to taking pictures indoors.

This is one of my tried-and-true dresses. Charlotte Russe can be very hit-or-miss, but I love this one. It’s strapless and slides around everywhere on the top now that I’ve lost some boobage, so I always wear it with a tank or a tee underneath. And today it was finally chilly, so I added a cardigan too!

The hair was an experiment. I found the tutorial on Pinterest and played around with it at home, but today was the first time I tried wearing it out. I really liked it, and I got a lot of compliments, so maybe I’ll try it again soon!

Although if I try wearing that hairstyle with last week’s sailor dress, someone needs to stop me.

Also, I watched Coraline with my aftercare kids today, and now I need to be her for Halloween.

What Season Is It Anyway?

Untitled
Oy, this outfit. Spring cardigan, summer dress, autumn boots…I don’t know how to dress myself right now! Nashville just can’t decide what season it wants to be. Ordinarily I like wearing summer and spring clothes- it’s so much easier, just throw on a dress and you’re done!- but I have all these cute boots and tights and sweaters I’m dying to wear.

Today was a pretty low-key day- the usual gamut of library, theatre arts class, and aftercare. The only downside? The only movie the aftercare kids wanted to watch was High School Musical. Which they also watched on Monday. Ughhhhhhhhh…I’m bringing different movies next week.

Also, please ignore the fact that my cardigan is misbuttoned. Oops.

Le Gasp, Pants!

10/19/12

This is the first time I’ve worn pants to work ever. Ever.

I don’t really like wearing pants- I feel like they fit me funny- but I don’t mind this particular pair. They’ve got that cropped pedal-pusher 1950s look I like, and they were extremely comfortable for today- I was choreographing the battle scene for Narnia and needed to be comfy and covered enough to do crazy things like roll around on the floor.

I also wore my contacts! I wear disposables and I’m down to my last pair without knowing when I’ll have time for a doctor’s appointment, so I only bring them out for special occasions. Today was headshots for Narnia, so I needed to look prettyish and stuff. Also the reason for the plain black tee shirt, and why I wore it with pants.

And there are my glorious rainbow Keds! I love them.

And also a cameo appearance by my car keys.

I Look Like a Fourteen-Year-Old

10/18/12

I really love this skirt, but it makes me look very young. But I wore it anyway! I tried pairing it with a button-up shirt to look more grown-up, but it just doesn’t change the fact that I look like a ninth grader.

And then, for Narnia rehearsal, I changed out of the striped button up and put on my Harry Potter tee, so I looked even younger. Oh, well. I was comfy!
